New Years Inspiration

I'll admit, my New Year's Eve celebrations are rarely glamorous..... ok, they're never glamorous at all, but over the years I've learned that a low-key celebration can be just as fun as a festive night out. This year I'll be celebrating with my family on the ski slopes in Colorado so my NYE attire will most likely include several layers, thick tights and warm boots, but I've rounded up a little inspiration if you're planning to attend a fancier affair. My ultimate New Year's Party would include a heavy dose of glitter, festive cocktails, disco ball decor and champagne, but I am so thankful to be able to celebrate with my family, even if it is a low-key night.

Indulgent Hot Chocolate

Growing up, I wasn't a very big fan of hot chocolate, but it turns out I was just drinking the wrong kind. I always thought that store-bought varieties tasted watered down and finally gave up on the pre-mixed packets a few years ago when I made it from scratch for the first time. As with most things, the homemade version was definitely much better and I instantly became a fan! This year I gave this Mexican hot chocolate recipe a try and was not disappointed. The result was an extremely rich and indulgent drink with a hint of chili pepper and cinnamon, which gave it a unique flavor. I adapted the recipe slightly, so you can view the original version by clicking the link above or try my version below.

Indulgent Hot Chocolate

• 4 Tablespoons unsweetened  cocoa powder
• 2 Tablespoons sugar
• 1 small square of your favorite dark chocolate
• 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
• a pinch of chili powder
• 1 cup milk (I used 1%)

1. Heat milk in a microwave safe bowl for a minute or two, being sure not to overheat.
2. While the milk is in the microwave, whisk together the cocoa, cinnamon and chili powder in a small bowl.
3. Add the warm milk and square of chocolate to the dry mixture and whisk until chocolate is melted and ingredients are well combined.
4. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and marshmallows and enjoy!

DIY Agate Napkin Rings

Shortly after posting my previous DIY I came up with the idea to use the same technique to create agate napkin rings for the holidays and I am pretty excited with how they turned out! I love that they are not overly "festive" and could be used for a variety of occasions throughout the year, but also look holiday appropriate when paired with wintery holiday decor, such as ornaments and pine cones. Also, despite looking expensive, these napkin rings were actually pretty cheap and easy to make, which is perfect during the hectic holiday season.

Materials:

• agate slices
• wooden napkin rings (I found mine at Michael's)
gold leaf kit
• soft paint brush
• super glue

1. Begin by gold leafing the edges of your agates, using this post for reference. I use the directions that come along with the gold leafing kit, but you may find the extra photos from my previous post helpful.

2. Once the agates are dry, decide which side you would like to face upward when using the napkin ring and place that side down on a clean dry surface. (I used a paper plate!)

3. Add a small dot of glue on the back of each stone and attach the wooden napkin rings applying firm pressure for approximately 30 seconds.

4. Let the napkin rings dry overnight and you're ready to set the table and impress your guests!
